During postpartum recovery visits, one question I hear very often is:

“Can we start massaging my C-section scar now?”

Many mothers are eager to begin scar massage, especially when the area feels numb, tight or simply different from before.

But scar massage is not something that should be rushed.

Before beginning direct C-section scar massage, the wound should be fully healed and your doctor  should confirm that it is safe to begin.

For many women, this may be around 6–8 weeks after a C-section. However, healing varies between individuals.

The condition of your scar matters more than simply counting the number of weeks since birth.

Is Six Weeks Postpartum Always the Right Time to Start?

No — six weeks is not an automatic green light.

Some women may have a fully healed incision around this stage. Others may need longer.

Before direct scar massage, there should be no open areas, scabs or signs of ongoing wound problems.

This is why I do not look at the postpartum calendar alone when considering scar care.

Six weeks postpartum does not automatically mean every C-section scar is ready for massage.

How Do I Know If My C-Section Scar May Be Ready?

C-section scar numbness and altered sensation may occur when small nerves around the incision are affected during surgery, with sensation sometimes improving over time.

Before starting direct scar massage, check that there is:

✓ No open area along the incision
✓ No scab remaining
✓ No wound discharge or oozing
✓ No increasing redness or swelling
✓ No concern about infection

Your doctor should check the scar and confirm that it is safe to begin massage.

If you notice increasing pain, redness, swelling or discharge, seek medical review rather than massaging the area.

What If My Scar Feels Numb, Tight or Sensitive?

C-section scar numbness and altered sensation may occur when small nerves around the incision are affected during surgery, with sensation sometimes improving over time.

During postpartum recovery visits, I sometimes hear mothers say:

“I don’t even like touching my scar.”

Others tell me:

“It feels tight or stuck when I move.”

Numbness, pain or a stretching sensation can occur around a C-section scar during recovery.

For a sensitive scar, scar care may begin with gentle touch and desensitisation rather than immediately applying deeper pressure.

Not every scar needs the same technique or the same amount of pressure.

What Does C-Section Scar Massage Actually Involve?

Scar massage is not simply rubbing the scar harder.

Depending on scar healing, sensitivity and mobility, scar care may include:

✓ Gentle desensitisation
✓ Assessing scar and surrounding tissue movement
✓ Gentle movements around or over the healed scar
✓ Gradual scar mobilisation
✓ Progressing pressure according to tissue response

NHS physiotherapy guidance describes gentle scar mobilisation only once the wound has completely healed.

Scar massage should be adapted to the individual scar.

Can I Massage an Old C-Section Scar?

It is not necessarily too late.

Even years after a C-section, some women continue to notice tightness, sensitivity or reduced movement around the scar.

An older scar can still be assessed to understand how the scar and surrounding tissue move and respond.

Some NHS scar guidance specifically states that it is “never too late to start” scar massage.

The aim is not to promise that an old scar will disappear.

Scar care may instead focus on comfort, sensitivity and tissue mobility.

When Should You Avoid C-Section Scar Massage

Do not massage directly over a wound that is open or has not fully healed.

Seek medical review if you notice:

✓ Increasing redness or swelling
✓ Wound discharge or oozing
✓ Increasing pain
✓ The wound appears to be opening
✓ Possible signs of infection

Starting scar massage too early may contribute to wound reopening or tearing and infection risk.

Scar massage should never replace medical assessment of a wound-healing concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start C-section scar massage at 6 weeks postpartum?

Not automatically.

Many C-section scars may be fully healed around 6–8 weeks, but healing varies. Your doctor or midwife should check the scar and confirm that it is safe to begin massage.

Numbness can occur during C-section recovery.

Once the scar has been checked and is safe for scar care, gentle touch or desensitisation may be more appropriate before progressing to stronger pressure.

Scar massage should not simply be forceful because the scar feels tight.

Technique and pressure should be adjusted according to sensitivity and tissue response.

Not necessarily.

An older scar may still be assessed for sensitivity and tissue mobility.

No.

Scar massage cannot erase a surgical scar. Scars often change and fade over time, but they may not disappear completely.
